Summer Pet Safety with Puppy Bumpers® – A Giveaway!
What’s puffy, soft and cute all over? No, not a fluffy puppy; it’s Puppy Bumpers®! These stylish and protective problem solvers keep dogs from squeezing through fences, between rails and under gates, so you never have to worry that Fifi or Fido will Houdini themselves out of your yard. And, they’re great now, as a summer pet safety product giving you peace of mind.
A Therapy Dog Person Invented It
Puppy Bumpers® were invented in 2008 by Ann W. Price, a therapy dog team trainer who visited pediatric oncology patients with her four therapy dogs. Her little 6 lb Maltese, Daisy, was escaping through a baby gate and she was concerned. These colorful puffy collars, stuffed with polyester fiber-fill are light and comfortable and Dog Fancy magazine selected the product, early on, as an Editors’ Choice. Other awards followed with Puppy Bumpers® being named NBC’s syndicated radio show, Animal Radio‘s #1 Pet Gadget that season, a Petside’s Top 10 Pet Product, and was even featured on Good Morning America Now with Dr. Marty Becker. Impressive!
While we don’t have gates or a backyard deck or balcony, I tried one of the pink and white polka-dot ones on Sophie that the folks at Puppy Bumpers® were kind enough to send us for this review, and tested it using a friend’s fence. I threw Sophie’s toy purposefully hard enough to go through the slats of the fence, and Sophie couldn’t go through. So, it does work and looks good, while being functional. You can see Sophie with her Puppy Bumper here.
Puppy Bumpers® has added new collections, including Ultra (tough, and made with heavy duty fabric), Rainy Day (water-resistant fabric with a poly coating) and the new Glow Pups (reflective poly safety fabric), as well as the most popular, Original Puppy Bumpers®, (made using cotton). They come in three sizes:
- 4 to 9 or 10 lbs – Up to 10” size
- 10 to 13 or 14 lbs – 10 to 13” size
- 13 to 20 lbs – 13 to 16” size
Sophie tried an up to 10″ neck size and it just fit her. She weighs a bit over 10 lbs and her neck measures just under 10″. They attach via grosgrain ribbon loops that you snake your dog’s collar through and then it snaps closed at the front, so it’s very secure. They suggest earmarking a separate collar that will stay attached to the Puppy Bumper. What I liked, too, is that this product doesn’t restrict Sophie’s movement at all. It just sit on top of her collar.
All of the Puppy Bumpers® are washable, using the gentle cycle with cold water and are dryer safe on low heat, except the Rainy Day bumper, which should be wiped clean with a damp cloth.

What’s your go to summer safety product? How has it helped you; maybe it can help us, too?!
What a cute idea and very stylish too! Reminds me of “rubber baby buggy bumpers”, lol!
Baby bumpers, exactly, Elaine! It reminds me of them, too. I’m sure that’s what gave her the idea. 🙂
What a very cool idea! One of Sadie’s tricks in her later months was to try and squeeze through the spindles on the staircase. This always terrified me, so I rarely left her upstairs alone. This would have been great for her!
Hi Christina! Yes, seems like that could’ve solved the problem. This morning while walking the dogs, I encountered two small dogs, separately, who were loose and ran either across the street or close to it. We found the dog mom, in both cases, and they took the pups inside, but it was really scary. This is a great product to avoid they getting out of the yard unsupervised.
Your little pup is so cute with that pink thing around her neck. That’s quite an innovative idea! Thanks for the great review.
Thanks, Jeanne! Sophie is our little princess. 🙂 So glad you liked the review!
What a super cool product to help keep small dogs safe. I love this idea of a puppy bumper to stop puppies and small breeds from escaping through gates, balconies, and even from being able to fall through the gaps in the railing next to stairs. I will recommend this to clients.
Hey Jen! I know; great safety product, done stylishly. Gotta love that! That’s awesome re recommending. I’m sure they’ll appreciate it.
That is one ingenious idea.
I was just saying that, Cathy! It’s a good idea and she’s made it super cute, too.
I don’t have any gates or fences the dogs can put their heads through either. I love the idea though.
Hi Jess! Yep, I hear ya. But gotta love the creativity of the idea! 🙂
Haha! This is so neat! I had problems with Bailey going through spaces under our chain linked fence and this might have helped.
Absolutely, Abby! If we had a fence, I would totally have several,in different colors and patterns. I can’t help myself that way….:-)
What a cool invention! Sophie looks so cute, too! 🙂 I know my Dewi’s breeder could have used these when she had his litter at home. She had some decking that they would have slipped through, had she not lined it with another smaller-opening fencing. I’m trying to picture a litter of cardigan corgi puppies running around in colored neck loops, and I think I woud just DIE if I ever saw it!
By the way, I have a big tom cat who needs one of these, so he can’t fit through the door on the foster kitten feeder. 😉
Hey Elizabeth! I wonder how many kitties use them? I bet quite a few. The picture in my mind of those adorbs chubby Corgi puppies in these would def be a cuteness overload!
I’ve seen those before! Mr. N can wriggle through normal fences so it would come in handy.
Hi April! This would be perfect for Mr. N! They work; tried and tested on my Sophie, and for me, who wants it to also be really stylish, they come in adorable colors/patterns and these fabrics where you can choose water resistant or extra tough for the bruiser boys (or tenacious terriers)…stuff like that. Good product.
