The Collarless Coat For Dogs – A Spring Trend on Bark and Swagger
Collarless coats remind me of Jackie O. You know…chic, tailored, clean. And, even though I think Jackie, collarless coats work for more than a tailored look. Funky, retro, denim, formal, the collarless coat is a staple. This spring, it’s also a trend, and one I think translates very well for our pups. So let’s take a look at the early designers who helped usher it in, and some great looking collarless coats for dogs.
A bit of history…
From what I can tell, the collarless jacket was introduced in the 1950’s by Coco Chanel for women, and got a remake in the 1960’s by designers like Pierre Cardin for men, and John Cavanaugh for women. The 60’s was a time of sweeping cultural change in fashion, and designers were experimenting with everything from style to materials. Television and film were introducing style icons of the era like The Avengers‘ Emma Peel (remember her? Loved that show!) and Ready Steady Go‘s Cathy McGowan, and films like Alfie, which showcased swinging London style.
What about the dog…
you ask? And, rightfully, so! That’s why we’re here. I’ve found some fun examples of collarless coats and jackets for our babies, so ready…steady…go!
The Coco Coat
Inspired by none other than Coco Chanel herself (we knew that!), this classic look never goes out of style. Like the nubby texture of her most famous suits, the Coco Coat is made from medium weight tweed, has enamel buttons down the front, decorative pockets and a removable flower corsage. Comes in white with black trim and pink with white trim.

The Pink Zebra Coat
This has definite wow factor! Designed by Yvette Ruta, this little stunner has hot pink zebra stripes against a shimmery champagne background. The bodice has black beading embellishments on a gold embroidered trim and border. Long black beads on a bed of black eyelash trim accent the coat’s edge, giving it a bit of a naughty feel. The coat is fully lined in champagne color bridal satin. Yes, ma’am!

Lilac Linen Custom Coat
This very springy custom-made coat is one of my Couture by Sophie designs, and there’s little Sophie modeling! 🙂 It’s made from soft and high quality linen, lined in cream linen, with special decorative buttons at the back of the neck and belt. Because this is a custom coat, it is created to fit your dog exactly, so the buttons are functional. The neck yoke was inspired by Karl Lagerfeld’s spring neckline for Chanel.

This collection is perfection! Your lines are perfect. I haven’t seen perfection like that not even in my own designer Dolce & Gabbana clothes I wear! I love the fabrics and colors. I also love your sets of coats, collars, leashes, and carry bags. It’s impossible to find anything to match which is exactly what I have been looking for. I just see one problem that I must tell you, I want them all! Thank you for showing the beautiful big dog coat too. Those dogs are great models and Sofie is so precious and you can tell by now she must be a complete professional! Thanks again, now I must deside.
Thank you, Holly!! What an amazing compliment! Thrilled you like Couture by Sophie! If you want any advice or guidance in choosing, let me know. You can reach me at jody@couturebysophie.com. Have a great day!
