Sexy Dog Fashion From Korea: International Spotlight on PinUp Dog
One of the things I was excited about covering when I started Bark and Swagger is international dog fashion. Just like the preview we get of upcoming trends from Paris, London & Tokyo Fashion Weeks, I want to know what’s happening in dog design around the world. Asia, for me, is a region that is especially interesting, so I was thrilled to learn about a cool, young company creating sexy dog fashions from Korea. Today’s International Spotlight is on PinUp Dog.
PinUp Dog is the brainchild of former Hong Kong fashion model and luxury designer, Jihee Lee. As a big dog lover with four of her own, Jihee started designing bags that she adapted for her dogs. She got a great reaction and people started asking her to make bags for their pups. Jihee saw a way to combine her two big passions – dogs and fashion.
PinUp Dog started in December of 2010, with the philosophy of bringing people together who love animals and design. But not just any design…sexy, but comfortable, fashion for dogs. PinUp Dog has a fresh perspective that is distinctly Korean, yet relatable and very wearable. I’m excited to share Jihee’s talent with you. So, I reached out to her in Korea, with questions about the brand and the really cute and, yes, sexy fashion they design. They were, after all, the first to create lingerie for dogs!
BaS: Do the designs reflect fashion trends in Korea and where does your inspiration come from?
PUD: Definitely! Our inspiration comes from women’s fashion here in Korea, like the K -Pop trend; very colorful, funky, and sometimes, provocative. Our lingerie for dogs is an example. Korea has a very funky and, in some ways, kinky fashion trend right now. We love lots of colorful matching and big bold jewels. To me, dog clothes should be a little bit like over acting! They should be colorful, happy, eccentric.
BaS: I love that description! Provocative to inspire conversation. So, what is the process of design from idea to completion?
PUD: First, I’ll get an idea, and it could be suddenly, anywhere, any time. I could be standing on a street corner, checking out a magazine or just looking at my dogs. Then, the actual design takes shape on my computer. I send it to our team, and we start to talk about the fabric we will use, the patterns we will create. We always go to the late night fabric market to find just the right treasure we are looking for. Then, our sub [assistant] designer makes a sample and we meet again to see what could be improved or changed. Once everything is finalized, we decide on the quantity to make, the sizing chart and other details, and instructions are given to our factory in Korea, who manufactures the item.
BaS: Do you produce mass market quantities or make to order?
PUD: We produce quantities, but I dont like the term mass market, because many of our items are handmade. Also, we produce new clothes very often so mass production is not very appropariate for us. Every piece is special and sometimes unique, like our cashmere knits. They are made by women in a retired grandmothers association in Korea’s countryside!
BaS: Are there many dog fashion designers in Korea?
PUD: Yes, recently many pet brands have come and gone quickly. We are happy to be able to say are one of the top 3 big brands in Korea.
BaS: You have a wide variety of wonderful pieces you design to cover every aspect of a dog’s wardrobe. In your super stylish carry bags, I see you’ve also designed a piece called the office bag, that is more structured. Do many people bring their dogs to work in Seoul?
PUD: The office bags were a limited edition product. Actually, our office day and our mesh bags were the result of a collaboration with MCM (a famous Korean bag brand), and it was very popular. Usually, people do not bring dogs to work in companies, but for some trendy jobs, they do.
BaS: The J’adore fur coat is gorgeous! What materials is it made from?
PUD: It is synthetic fur that we selected carefully, to make sure it was as smooth and soft as possible. We are animal lovers so we use faux fur, and some synthetic fabrics are really excellent today.
