Eye gunk. It even sounds icky. And yet, as pet parents, we sometimes have to deal with eye discharge in dogs. I’ve learned it contains bacteria and yeast, both items we want to remove from our dog’s faces on a regular basis to avoid any real infections setting in. What I was doing was washing out Sophie and Jasper’s eyes each night with a sterile, isotonic buffered solution from the vet, as part of our evening grooming ritual. And, it worked ok, but it didn’t address the area under the eye or their faces. I still use it every couple of days to clear out the grit and grime of New York City. But, I’ve tried something new that I really love and want to share it with you!
Some of my readers may be familiar with dog fashion spa, a brand of luxury grooming products I use and love. I’ve been hydrating Sophie’s paws with their Nose & Paw Moisturizer for months now, and it’s one of the only products I’ve found that works. And, I like their creams and fragrances. But, I hadn’t tried their eye pads until about 2 weeks ago.
dog fashion spa generously sent me a tub of the Gentle Eye Pads to review. They understand I only write about things I love, so what you’ll read here is my opinion of the product from my own experience using it on my dogs.
Unlike the solution from the vet, which I squirt into their eyes, these pads are mess-free and allow me to wipe out the dried gunk that accumulates at the corners and just under their eyes, and to clean and all around their faces. Sophie, in particular, had been starting to get a lot of this clear and dried discharge, and while it doesn’t discolor her hair like with some breeds, it was making her face dirty. Jasper, on the other hand, was waking up with these white strings at the inner corners of his eyes. I had them checked at our vet and there was no infection of any kind. That’s the thing. If you notice any discharge that is green or yellow in color, I would immediately get that checked out by your vet because those colors usually indicate infection. If you’re concerned about any discharge at all, I’m a better-safe-than-sorry kind of gal and like to have the peace of mind of getting things looked at. But, neither Sophie nor Jasper had any infection.
The really cool thing about the eye pads was, after just two nights of use, the discharge was gone. Sophie’s crusties were gone, too! The pads smell fresh; there’s no perfumey or medicinal smell I could detect. And, their little faces were clean! We’ve been using the pads almost every night now for a couple of weeks and each morning, they wake up with clear eyes. Good-bye gunk! And for that, mom’s happy. 🙂
