A Great Product to Alleviate Eye Discharge in Dogs
Eye gunk. It even sounds icky. And yet, as pet parents, we sometimes have to deal with eye discharge in dogs. I’ve learned it contains bacteria and yeast, both items we want to remove from our dog’s faces on a regular basis to avoid any real infections setting in. What I was doing was washing out Sophie and Jasper’s eyes each night with a sterile, isotonic buffered solution from the vet, as part of our evening grooming ritual. And, it worked ok, but it didn’t address the area under the eye or their faces. I still use it every couple of days to clear out the grit and grime of New York City. But, I’ve tried something new that I really love and want to share it with you!
Some of my readers may be familiar with dog fashion spa, a brand of luxury grooming products I use and love. I’ve been hydrating Sophie’s paws with their Nose & Paw Moisturizer for months now, and it’s one of the only products I’ve found that works. And, I like their creams and fragrances. But, I hadn’t tried their eye pads until about 2 weeks ago.
dog fashion spa generously sent me a tub of the Gentle Eye Pads to review. They understand I only write about things I love, so what you’ll read here is my opinion of the product from my own experience using it on my dogs.
Unlike the solution from the vet, which I squirt into their eyes, these pads are mess-free and allow me to wipe out the dried gunk that accumulates at the corners and just under their eyes, and to clean and all around their faces. Sophie, in particular, had been starting to get a lot of this clear and dried discharge, and while it doesn’t discolor her hair like with some breeds, it was making her face dirty. Jasper, on the other hand, was waking up with these white strings at the inner corners of his eyes. I had them checked at our vet and there was no infection of any kind. That’s the thing. If you notice any discharge that is green or yellow in color, I would immediately get that checked out by your vet because those colors usually indicate infection. If you’re concerned about any discharge at all, I’m a better-safe-than-sorry kind of gal and like to have the peace of mind of getting things looked at. But, neither Sophie nor Jasper had any infection.
The really cool thing about the eye pads was, after just two nights of use, the discharge was gone. Sophie’s crusties were gone, too! The pads smell fresh; there’s no perfumey or medicinal smell I could detect. And, their little faces were clean! We’ve been using the pads almost every night now for a couple of weeks and each morning, they wake up with clear eyes. Good-bye gunk! And for that, mom’s happy. 🙂
dog fashion spa has a great opportunity on right now. Get a complimentary jar of Gentle Eye Pads with the purchase of any other item. With so many beautiful things to choose from, I bet you can’t pick just one! 🙂
We had heard that camomile tea did much the same thing, and we’ve been using it. Is this product appreciably better??
Hi Bill – Thanks for reaching out. And thanks for this information. I hadn’t heard that about chamomile tea but great to know. I don’t know if the dog fashion spa pads are appreciably better. What I do know is they handle the bacteria and yeast in a dog’s eye discharge as well as whatever they pick up on their faces from being out and about. Does the chamomile do the same? If yes, I’d stick with what’s working for you. If not, I’d look into whether this was something you wanted in a product. You could always give it a try and see if you liked. Hope that was helpful. Please let me know if you have any other questions. I can also ask the company owner any product related questions, too.
Are the eye cleansing pads along the Angel Eyes? I have a white faced shih tzu that has constant leakage which can turn his snowy white face into rust…ugh! He’s been to the vet & doesn’t have an eye problem. I’ve tried various foods, thinking food allergies, to no avail! Will this product help?
Hi Paula! Before I responded, I wanted to consult with the owner of dog fashion spa to make sure I gave you the correct information. What Elena had to say was this: It will make them better by removing anything that’s fresh and keeping the face really clean, but once the fur is permanently decolored sometimes you need to cut and start growing new hair.
Also, extremely important, she said:
– stop feeding chicken (I think because of increased chance of allergies with chicken)
– only give the dog distilled water
Her new pup, Spa (:-) ) arrived with rust stains and she said she’s working on them. It takes time. Her product, the Gentle Eye Pads, doesn’t have bleach. The Angel Eyes might; I’m not sure, you’d have to check. My suggestion is click on the dog fashion spa in my article and go to the homepage of the site. See if there’s something you’d like for your pup (they have beautiful products) and you’ll get a complimentary tub of the eye pads along with it. Try them. Try having your groomer or you cut away the stained hair and start washing under his eyes and his face 2x/day with the pads to keep it clean and not allow the eye discharge to remain on the hair for very long. See what happens over a couple of weeks and please, let me know. I’m really interested in how it goes. If you have any other questions, please, don’t hesitate. Thanks, Paula.
I saw this facebook i have three Maltese with the blood eyes do think this will work ?
Hi Brenda! What I would do is click on the dog fashion spa link in the article and look at the site. They have some great products. Buy one and then get the complimentary gift of the eye pads and try them. Not having a dog with the blood eyes problem, I can’t say for sure. I have heard there are a couple of products on the market that work for this but not sure about the ingredients; don’t know enough about them. With the eye pads, I use them and know they’re safe. Let me know if you decide to try or if you have any other questions I can help you with. Would love to know the outcome. Thx.
