Did you know that 5-7 million animals enter U.S. shelters every year, and close to 3 million are euthanized? That’s why it’s so important to support our local no kill shelters and to adopt our pets. And, this is what inspired AdoptaShelter.com founder, Chris Ruben, to launch the site.
AdoptaShelter.com was founded five years ago to support the organizations doing great work for our homeless companion animals. “From the beginning, AdoptaShelter.com has been a total volunteer team effort,” declared Ruben. “We built this website for the singular purpose of generating much-needed cash donations from the online shopping of animal lovers.”
So, do you shop Walmart, Expedia, Petco, Amazon? What about Macy’s, Office Depot, Petsmart, Overstock.com? If you answered yes to any of these, would you click through AdoptAShelter.com first, so your purchase helps your local animal shelter or rescue at no cost to you? Of course you would! And, that isn’t even the tip of the iceberg; remember, we’re talking over 750 popular retailers!
Shelters and rescue orgs, this helps you! When you enroll your organization with AdoptaShelter.com, you become part of a shopping community of animal lovers who want to help. So, go to AdoptaShelter.com and sign up.
Now, let’s talk Lisa!
When you hear the name Lisa Vanderpump, some of you may think wealthy, reality tv star, author and restauranteur. Did you realize Lisa is also an animal activist who’s traveled to Asia and Washington D.C. to raise awareness about the cruel atrocities of the dog meat trade? She created Vanderpump Dogs out of her and husband, Ken Todd’s deep love for dogs. And, they have eight of them! The infamous Giggy, Harrison, Pink Dog, Pikachu, Lollipop, Schnookie, Rumpy and Avery rule the roost at their Beverly Hills home.
“It was never a normal situation at home,” Vanderpump laughed. “There would always be ponies in the kitchen and I rode the horse to the village in my pajamas, and we had ducks on the bed. Now, we are absolutely passionate about our dogs, I mean they are like our children, really. I think after having been a judge at the Hero Dog Awards for the last few years, I have an even greater respect for man’s best friend. My life has literally gone to the dogs.”
What is Vanderpump Dogs?
It’s Lisa and Ken’s platform to help change the world for the better for dogs. They’ve created campaigns here and abroad to help influence legislation, to educate and to affect the treatment of animals globally.
Vanderpump Dogs has its paws in the following:
- The Spot, their Los Angeles rescue and shelter. The Spot encompasses the L.A. Rescue team, which finds stray or abandoned dogs, treats and cares for them and helps them get adopted, via their facility and online.
The Spot includes a transport van, complete with an emergency medical kit, kennels, and air conditioning, helps to execute larger rescues for dogs out of dangerous circumstances. These are dogs living on the street or in abusive and neglectful homes.
- International Work – Lisa and Ken have traveled to Asia and Washington, to draw more attention to the cruel torture of the dog meat trade and to end the Yulin Dog Meat Festival. Lisa, with a small number of other animal activists, was invited before Congress on September 14, 2016, to share what she’s seen and learned about this horrendous industry, and to help push through Resolution 752 to end Yulin and this inhuman trade.
- Vanderpump Dogs has petitions and crowdfunding campaigns, in partnership with animal activist organizations on the ground in Asia, like The DuoDuo Animal Welfare Project, to shut Yulin down and to end the dog meat trade in China.
- There is the 10 x 10 Campaign where, for $10,000, they can medically treat, groom, feed, adopt out and transport out of China 10 dog meat trade survivors. And, they are involved in raising funds for a shelter in China, where bigger strays waiting for transport can be housed and receive good care.
So, when you help raise money for Vanderpump Dogs, you are supporting a great cause, both domestically and abroad.
With a life as rich and full as hers, I asked Lisa what she would like her legacy to be. “I would like to feel that I’ve implemented some kind of change in this world,” she shared. “I’d like to say I’ve lived my life with humor, with grace. I’d like to say that the time I’ve spent on this planet, hopefully I’ve made some sort of difference for it to be a better world and a better society.”

A sweet AdoptaShelter.com Adoption Story
With over $80,000 raised for shelters from shopping on the site, there are quite a few wonderful adoption stories provided by grateful shelters and patrons. Throughout the campaign, I’ll be sharing some with you. Here’s Burt’s story, as told by his dad:
Our home felt empty after losing our terrier-mix, Abby, who we lost to cancer. Because we do kitten rescue, we needed a very cat-friendly dog. For over a year, we searched animal shelters and adoption events and never found the one. On the night of June 22, I saw a Pug-mix on the Flower Mound Animal Services website. I’ve never been drawn to Pugs, but my little voice said, “He’s the one.” I was at the shelter when they opened. He was around 8 years old, sweet, laid back and when we showed him a cat, he was totally indifferent. HE WAS THE ONE! We named him Burt after the character in the Tremors movies. the Burt. At home he was as indifferent to cats as he was at the shelter. My 17-year-old Siamese-mix, Sam, even slept next to him on the first day. He loves walks and his Lambchop toy, and we love him. Thanks, Flower Mound Animal Services, for making our family whole again.
