Don’t get me wrong; I love my daughter. She’s my heart. But, at 30 years old, Morgan has her own life across the country. And, like many of you with and without human children, I’m a mom to my animals, too. So, with Mother’s Day just around the corner, I went searching for something different that acknowledges the love we share with our pups, and how much they enrich our lives (kitty moms, no disrespect. I love them, too!). I discovered a very cool brand from Norway, called Furry Tales, making pop-culture-inspired jewelry for our dogs and us. I’m excited to share that they are fresh fashion in the Bark & Swagger Boutique, so go see what wonderful Mother’s Day gifts they’re offering. If you order soon, you can get in time. Here’s what I love about Furry Tales.
What’s special about them?
If you’re a pop culture lover like me, you’ll connect with the styling behind the collections, like the colorful “Hi!” tags or the equally colorful, resin Mickey Mouse lock and key. If you’re a haute hipster, the downtown meets industrial vibe of some of the jewelry will be right up your alley, like the Hipsta, Bad to the Bone or Heartbreaker necklaces.
If you love color or pieces with bold beads, you’re covered; Happy and the Black & White series of matching necklaces or tassel tags, with a human bracelet, are just two to choose from. The messages are encased in a cool-looking cabochon charm with shiny steel backing and they hang from ball chains.
I’m smitten. I share a baby pink Love beads set with Ani, our little Chi girl. Mine is a long necklace, with the charm, “i love my dog.” Hers is a matching necklace, with the charm “i love my mom.” How wonderful a gift is that for Mother’s Day?!
For expressing your love for dogs, founder/designer Siw Amina Bech created mom necklaces with messages like, “She Who Sleeps with Dogs” and “All You Need is Love and a Dog.”
I’m often inspired by other designers’ stories of how they got started; what inspired them. Here’s Siw’s.
The Furry Tales story…
It took a trip to Las Vegas to inspire the Fredrikstad, Norway-based designer to start Furry Tales. It was Siw’s birthday, and she’d taken the trip to Sin City to visit with her human daughter and celebrate. Of course, she took along her two precious Chihuahua babies, Molly Amelia Button and Emma Yazemine Button, both adopted from US shelters. One of her presents was pearls and other bling.
Influenced by the over-the-top Vegas culture, juxtaposed with her own culture and the strange motel they stayed in (there was a moose outside the entrance), Siw started playing around with the pieces. The next day, while walking her dogs in Town Square, each wearing a creation of hers, she got an order. Today, she has a boutique and many, happy clients. And, we’re lucky enough to be exhibiting Furry Tales in the Boutique!
The way Bech describes what she does is, “Trend inspired pieces and happy pearls for dogs and owners.” Now, she has four. Carmel Luci-Ball and Laika Gazenko Button are Molly’s puppies.
