Willow Smith has to be the perfect young celebrity to cover on Bark and Swagger. She’s fresh, incredibly fashion forward and an animal lover. And, she’s created some really interesting looks, hot music and was an early adopter in safely dip-dyeing her pup. So, today, let’s check in with Willow Smith & her dogs in The Celebrity Spot.
What makes Willow so interesting?
This is a girl who has a charmed life. Daughter of Will and Jada Pinkett Smith, Willow and her older brother, Jaden, have very progressive and creative parents. It’s no wonder the two of them have chosen the artist’s life, as well. And each of them, with their respective projects, are doing it well. These kids really have talent!
Willow has staked her claim as a very adventurous and fierce fashion individualist. From her space aged to home girl looks (with pretty much everything in between), Willow is always interesting to watch. Chanel design icon, Karl Lagerfeld, agrees. He just shot Willow for a Chanel spread for V magazine, which has her looking pretty amazing. She combined clothes from her own closet with Chanel pieces to create her own very Willow statement. Such a little muse!
She has also made noise as a musical artist with her hit single, “Whip My Hair” in 2010, which became a Top 20 song on Billboard. More recently, she released the controversial song/video for “Summer Fling” and a new track with Jaden, called “5.” She’s signed to Jay Z’s Roc Nation label and was so unimpressed with the hip hop mogul that, during their first meeting, she fell asleep! Apparently out late the previous evening and unaware of the morning appointment, she was lucky to be wearing sunglasses and have her savvy parents negotiating with Jay when it all went down. No one was the wiser.
The girl has about 3 million Twitter followers, which is more than Queen Rania of Jordan, Yoko Ono or Kris Jenner. She’s also friends with Jaden’s bud, Justin Bieber, and has even battled him in a war of pranks and performed with him at concerts. Even Lady Gaga has cited her as a inspiration.
Willow is also all about giving back, particularly by supporting charities that help kids. Mom Jada credited Willow with motivating her to begin working with Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to end human trafficking and sex slavery. “[Willow] did her own research and realized that there were young girls her age in this country being trafficked for sex,” Pinkett Smith recalled to USA Today. “She was like, ‘Mommy — you don’t know what’s happening! … I’ve got to give my voice to this. These young girls out there need me.'”
The Smiths have a few dogs; the ones who have gotten the most attention are the ones Willow has claimed: an English Bulldog named Lil Homie (formerly Mr. Rockefeller) and a teacup Yorkie named Abby the Pea. Willow has been photographed walking each of the dog’s around town in NYC and L.A. She raised some eyebrows in 2011 when, again as an early adopter of a trend, she dip dyed Abby the Pea with neon pink ears and paws. You can see her walking Abby in L.A. above.
Bark and Swagger loves Willow Smith for her free spirit, her undeniable sense of style and her boundless creativity! If you or your kids are fans, too, there’s a cool kid’s book on Willow and her life and style called Day by Day with Willow Smith and an iPhone 5 or 5S Willow cover. For my daughter, back in the day, it was Britney Spears. Everything was about Brit. Maybe you have a little style maven in your house that loves Willow.
