Kristy Hinze Clark

The International Association of Pet Fashion Professionals, founded by friend and colleague Laurren Darr, bestowed a best designer award on this label. I’m talking about Legitimutt, a brand I came across a couple of years ago and tweeted about at the Global Pet Expo last March, for their stylish slickers.  The brainchild of former Australian supermodel, Kristy Hinze Clark, Legitimutt takes classic designs and gives them a bit of flair. What originally launched with collar, leashes and quilted horse blanket coats, has grown into a collection of adorable designer dog clothes, like Chi Chi polo shirts, bold-colored slickers, a variety of barn and city coats, these very cool waterproof and odor proof Sunshower line of collars and leashes, dresses and more.

There’s a Bark & Swagger GIVEAWAY below, sponsored by Legitimutt, who has donated beautiful product to us! Read on!

The Legitimutt Barn Coat

Kristy has an interesting story. Raised on a horse and cattle station in Beaudesert, Queensland, she was discovered when her mother enrolled her in deportment school on the Gold Coast. She became the youngest model to grace the cover of Australian Vogue at 14, and went on to walk the runway in Paris for such illustrious couture labels as Cacharel, Lanvin, Paco Rabanne, Sonia Rykiel, Jean Paul Gaultier, Custo Barcelona, Gianfranco Ferre and Tracy Reese. She’s acted in films and was a judge on Australia’s Project Runway for two years. And, as part of the Ford stable of models, she’s appeared in Sports Illustrated, GQ and the Victoria’s Secret catalogue.

Sunshower Collar

If that weren’t enough, Kristy is a passionate marine conservationist who studied marine biology at the State University of New York. She’s married to American entrepreneur and founder of Netscape, Jim Clark, and they just had their second child about a month ago. They already have a two-year-old daughter, Dylan Vivienne.

Kristy’s love of animals and her and Jim’s own fur family is what inspired Hinze Clark to create Legitimutt.  Her babies of the four-legged kind are her three adopted miniature schnauzers—Brando and Ava, both 4, and Elwood, 3.

Kristy with her pups

You’ll hear all about what’s new at Legitimutt from Kristy herself, when she appears on my radio show in the next couple of months.

But, I did catch up with her to see what new styles she’d released and get her personal take on where the label is headed.  “Legitimutt continues to provide timeless classics from the best fabrications, while striving to constantly create new items and categories,” she explained.  “Look for new bed styles, harnesses and carriers in 2015. As I start to design the collections for 2015, I am inspired by things that are classic, but with a slight whimsy.  Look for fun colors, amusing accents like fruit inspired buttons and there will certainly be a nautical grouping or two.”

The Park Avenue Coat

Some of Kristy’s fave pieces include The Park Avenue Coat,  a cotton cable knit over cashmere fleece with a faux mink trim, and the quilted barn jacket. “It’s our number one seller,” Hinze Clark shared.  “We’ve had to reorder fabric and buttons twice already this season to keep up with demand.  It comes in 3 colors and is great for males or females.”
