The Little Pastel Coat: Baby Pinks and Blues are in Doggy Fashion this Fall

Sophie ventured out today in her new fall dog coat, a little quilted pale-pink design, inspired by one of the all-time greats, Chanel. I’m a big fan and am in awe, repeatedly, of the beautiful things Karl Lagerfeld creates for that brand. I worked hard making this coat for her. As a relatively new sewer, it still requires a lot of focus for me to get it right and have her garments turn out with the attention to detail and design that I envision. So this is it and hope you like. I will admit, I’m a perfectionist and I always find tweaks I’d like to make to just about everything I make. Sometimes a garment is never actually finished! LOL

I have to say, even though I’m a warm weather girl, I do get excited when it’s time to pull out the fall clothes. There’s something about putting a fall outfit together that feels good like you’re really dressed and, this year, I like many of the trends and can see how I would incorporate them into my wardrobe and, with some, into Sophie’s. And I have to admit I splurged a bit and purchased a couple of new pieces to freshen up my fall wardrobe, so wearing those for the first time is fun! But, let’s get back to the dogs.

Baby Pinks and Blues a Fall Staple!

Sophie, as well as your pup, is no different from us. Having a new, stylish coat to debut when it gets chilly is a part of the Fall allure.

The New York Times described, “If the sheer number of baby pinks and chalky blues on the fall runways was any indication, pastels will be making a big statement this fall,” and they are. The designers incorporated pastels to soften winter and lift the spirit when it’s freezing and dreary outside. You’ve probably already seen some of your local department stores and boutiques carrying pale pink and blue coats. Here’s an example of one of them from the fall runway shows.

Making It Work for Our Dogs (or Cat)

How can we adapt this lovely trend for our canine friends? It’s easy and I’m going to recommend some items I love! If you love them too, you can click on the picture and purchase them. Pastel Dog Collars

Coats aren’t the only way to inject pastels into your dog’s wardrobe this season. There’s a world of accessories out there too! I love these pink and blue pastel dog collars. They’re made from nylon webbing with velvet ribbon sewn on top so it’s soft and comfortable on your dog’s neck. They feature premiere quality crystal rhinestones and come in six different sizes, from 5″ all the way to 17″. And if you love this for your cat, the manufacturer will add elastic so the collar is cat safe.

During the days of Fall when it’s not so cold yet, t-shirts are a great way to keep your dog from getting a chill. And in most homes where there’s a furry little girl and her daddy, a really cute pastel pink t-shirt like this one might be a great present to bring home. A little tidbit of fashion history I found: In 1916, Coco  Chanel was the first to use jersey knit in clothing and sent the fashion industry in an uproar. Until then, jersey had only been associated with and used for underwear! She is credited with making jersey what it is today – a staple. It is used in everything from t-shirts to dresses, and tops to skirts.

To summarize, pastels are a great way to add some spring into the cold winter months. Pale pinks and blues are flattering on almost any color or sized dog.
