Buddha Day 2014 – Our Dogs Carrying the Message of Peace Through Fashion

A Buddhist Monk and his praying Chihuahua on Bark and Swagger

Priest Joei Yoshikuni and Conan praying

Today is the Gregorian Calendar’s designated Buddha Day 2014, so I thought I’d share a story to bring a smile in honor of the sage, Siddharta Gautama Shakyamuni Buddha, on whose teachings Buddhism was founded. In a temple in Okinawa, Japan, a Buddhist monk kneels and prays before the altar. By his side, little hairy paws perched perfectly in prayer, sits Conan, the two year old, long-haired Chihuahua, who’s become a top attraction at this temple. Is Conan a devout Buddhist, like priest Joei Yoshikuni, his owner? Well, let’s just say he prays for treats. Conan has learned he gets rewarded pretty rapidly for sitting up prayer style. He even gets upset when someone takes his usual spot! “Clasping hands is a basic action of Buddhist prayer to show appreciation. He may be showing his thanks for treats and walks,” Yoshikuni offers. Priest Joei is also appreciative. Conan has increased attendance at the temple by 30%!

For those who don’t know anything about Buddha Day (I was in that category, too), I’ve done some research so I can share a bit about what we’re celebrating.

What is Buddha Day and why celebrate?

Buddha Day, also called Vesak (or Teachers) Day, celebrates the birth, enlightenment and death of Siddharta Gautama Shakyamuni Buddha, and is recognized by the approximately 300 million Buddhists around the world. The word comes from ‘budhi’, ‘to awaken’. It has its origins about 2,500 years ago when the Buddha, was himself awakened (enlightened) at the age of 35.

It’s significance lies with the Buddha’s message of universal peace to mankind. On this day, Buddhists will generally visit their temples for ceremonies, which include prayers and offerings of candles and flowers. They may also bathe a Buddha statue, share in a vegetarian meal and listen to teachings by monks. Releasing caged birds and animals is also a common practice, as it represents a symbol of liberation. However, in recent years, eco awareness has prompted less of this, as most tame animals let into the wild might not survive and those that do, may upset the ecosystem in the wild. All in all, celebrating a man whose legacy is associated with calling for universal peace, acceptance and love is something I can get behind.

Jewel Luxury Shirt

While this beautiful shirt isn’t literally Buddha-related, it does have a celebratory, Asian-inspired feeling. The metallic gold and floral linen fabric is made in Japan and is absolutely dazzling. Look at how it pops on this adorable, white-haired puppy model. I also think it would look stunning on a black or warm-toned brown dog. The metallic gold piping finishes the piece and it is lined in white satin. A winner!

In Summary

Buddha is all about love. Let’s celebrate the love we have for our pets today with doing something extra special for them. Maybe it’s an extra long walk, or an extra treat. Maybe it’s more cuddle time on the couch. For me? I’m going to play a couple of interactive games with Sophie. She loves using her hunting instincts to find the treats. And I love the bond we share when we play them together. Happy Buddha Day! May peace and love be present for you each and every day.
