Pawsturized Pads

Why is paw care so important?

A dog’s paw is made up of the following parts:

  • the claw
  • digital pads
  • the metacarpal pad
  • the dew claw
  • the carpal pad

Dogs are digit grade animals; their digits, or toes, bear the brunt of their weight when they walk.  Each of the parts of their pads serve an important function. I didn’t realize, did you?

  • The digital and metacarpal pads act as shock absorbers and help protect the bones and joints in the foot.
  • The carpal pads operate like the dog’s brakes, and help the him navigate slippery or steep slopes.
  • The pads also offer protection when walking on rough terrain. Dogs that are outside a lot and exposed to rough surfaces have thicker, rougher paw pad skin; dogs that stay in more and walk on smoother surfaces have softer pads.
  • The pads help our pups distinguish between these different types of terrain.
  • The dewclaws (those knobbly digits high up on the side of our dog’s front feet), help the modern day dog get a better grip on bones and other things the dog may like to chew on.

Other fun facts about feet:

  • Did you know that the inner layer of skin on the paw has sweat glands that convey perspiration to the outer layer of skin? Yup! This helps cool a hot dog and keeps the pads from getting too dry.
  • Paws can also exude moisture when a dog gets nervous or experiences stress, just like we do when we perspire excessively or get sweaty hands!

What Mother Nature left out and what you can do about it…

Paw pads are ingenious, really. They have a thick layer of fatty tissue that insulates the inner tissue from extreme temperatures; it doesn’t conduct cold as quickly. So, when the dog walks on the cold ground, the arteries transfer the chilled blood back to the body where it warms up again. Pretty cool, right? Mother Nature has thought of everything.

Well, almost everything. Dogs that walk where there are punishing salts spread on the ground to melt the snow or where the pavements are hot, are very vulnerable. If, like my Sophie and Jasper, your pup won’t walk in shoes or boots, you need an extra great protection system to keep this critical part of their body healthy and soft. We carry our kids over salty patches and dunk their paws in warm water after walks to remove any salt and dirt that remains.

Then, we religiously use Dog Fashion Spa’s Paw & Nose Moisturizer. I’m a big fan of this brand. Their products work and are made with lovely ingredients: organic grapeseed oil, safflower oil, wheat germ oil, sesame oil, vitamin a, vitamin d, vitamin b5, vitamin e, silk protein, natural protein, amino acids, bha, natural keratin, organic calcium, panthenol, thymol, methyl glucose ether. All natural and very nourishing.

Just two days after first trying it, Sophie’s paws were much softer and the little cracks I was beginning to notice were gone. Now, with Jasper, I’ve observed the same results. And, like most pet parents, that’s the bottom line for me.

We also use the Eye Pads nightly, to clean away any gunk in the corners and to get rid of yeast and bacteria around the eyes and face they might’ve picked up during the day. Both Sophie and Jasper’s eye gunk (they used to have this clear stuff in the corners all the time) has disappeared with the use of this product.

after purchasing some products of dog fashion spa, it is hard to say which one i like the best. the nose moisturizer is fantastic. i could see a difference in my dogs nose within a few days of using this product. no more dry noses. when i used the coat/skin lotion on my boy, he did a wiggle and got excited. he smelled great afterwards and his coat was very soft.
