You know I love talking dog fashion, and passing along tips! So, this item in our DIY Holiday Gifts for Your Dog Series is one close to my heart. If you want a simple, easy to make dog coat from upcycled materials (yes, eco conscious, too!), look no further. We’re bundling up Sophie and Jasper here in NYC on those cold days and a home made coat in a fabric you love is always a nice touch for the season. And, it’s uniquely your own; no one else will have it!

You’ll need a recycled quilted jacket for winter, or a recycled nylon jacket for spring/summer, fleece, flannel or wool for lining (or cotton for spring), some heavy duty velcro and you’re off!

The site Fine Diving Chicago is the source of this DIY dog coat and has complete instructions, the list of supplies you’ll need and a pattern to use and grade from here.

This DIY series is brought to us by Earth Heart, the wonderful company making aromatherapy mist sprays for dogs. The charming illustration above is by Griffin Thorne Illustrations.

Bark & Swagger is a huge fan of Earth Heart products. We use and love them because they’re all natural and they work.

Two of our faves are Canine Calm, which helps quell anxiety and nervousness in dogs, and Travel Calm, which for us, completely rid Jasper of his car sickness in a matter of hours.

Canine Calm could be a great and handy product to have in the house during the commotion of the holidays, when the calmest of dogs can get nervous.

I’ve made my fair share of dog coats and it’s such a great feeling to see what I’ve created with my own hands on my dog. It takes patience and perseverance, so if you try this, don’t give up! You’ll get there. And, if you have any questions along the way, reach out. Maybe I can help.

Have you ever made a piece of clothing for your dog? How did it turn out? Tell me about it in the comments!
