Pet theft is a very serious subject, but how we protect our furry friends can be fashionable and fun. July is Lost Pet Prevention Month, and a great time to find that fabulous ID tag as fashion statement meets full coverage protection. There are companies now making stylish tags in every color imaginable, blinged out or more subdued. The one I like, because it condenses everything I’d need to keep Sophie and Jasper safe, as well as offers me great resources if they get lost, is PetHub. Here’s what’s special about PetHub:

  • the first to utilize a QR (Quick Response) code on a pet ID tag that links to a unique, easy to update online profile of your pet
  • the first GPS locator system for lost pets. When the QR code is scanned by a smartphone, the location of your pet is pinpointed
  • a 24/7 Found Pet Hotline, a completely free service
  • has the NFC Chip, the same technology as the microchip will be embedded into your pet’s ID tag
  • offers a DNA service, added to your pet’s profile, to prove ownership for found pets

I  encourage you to go to their website, www.pethub.com, read about who they are and what they do, and strongly consider adding your pet(s) to their registry. And check out their very cool tags! We ordered a bunch so we can have one on each of their collars.

Just a small sampling…

We just adopted Jasper six weeks ago, but he already has an online PetHub profile and the very snazzy Dog is Good Dogvergnugen tag. I feel more secure knowing he and Sophie have their tags on. I mean, I’m so OCD about keeping an eye on our dogs, but you never know. Jasper is a pup and full of all boy exuberance and strength. And, he’s crazy nutsy about birds and squirrels. I don’t think he’d listen to me yet, if an opportunity presented itself that he couldn’t resist. We’re working very hard at training him, but he’s still very new to us and young.

The statistics tell us up to 2 millions pets are stolen each year and that 1 in 3 pets will go missing at some point in their lives. What we may not realize is that less than 20% of dogs and 2% of cats are ever returned home. Where do these dogs end up? In unimaginable places, from research laboratories to puppy mills, from dog fighting rings as bait dogs to ritual sacrifices for satanic cults. Very scary stuff.

The good news is there are things we can do to stop pet theft and protect our babies.  In addition to getting a full-coverage PetHub tag, Bark and Swagger and PetHub have partnered on this Pet Theft Prevention: It’s Fashionable infographic, giving us valuable tips on what we can do. I love the makeover the tech geniuses at PetHub have given their mascot pup…now a Bark and Swagger fashion plate! 🙂
